Salvation
Salvation refers to the act of God’s grace in delivering his people from bondage to sin and condemnation, transferring them to the kingdom of his beloved Son and giving them eternal life on the basis of his grace through the merit of Christ’s atoning death:Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In being translated to the Kingdom of God, that is, to the Light, we are bought out- literally- from the kingdom and power of darkness. We see the theme of light vs. darkness over and over in the Gospel and epistles of John. John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. The reason that we need salvation is that we are condemned, born in the flesh, and walking in darkness. We need to be rescued, because we are caught in the darkness. More than that, according to the scriptures, we are actually dead spiritually in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 1:1-3) and children of wrath. The fact of the matter is, we are all under condemnation because of sin, and that is why we need salvation! Here is the free offer, and the reality as we see it in the book of John: John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. The reality is that we are condemned already, because as we have noted previously, we are all under sin. We do not have to do anything to be condemned, we are already condemned. We must cover a huge topic related to salvation and our life in Christ: repentance. The word repentance is a concept that has to do with a literal changing of our mind as well as the direction we are going. We are all headed on the broad road of sin leading to death. Salvation is a rescue from this road that seems right to men who are blinded by the god of this world. Repentance is a change of mind granted by God as He rescues us from the kingdom of darkness. Matt 7:13-14 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. There are two ways that man can go, but both are assumed that they lead to life, but the fact is that there is only one way that leads to life. Everyone that you know is either on, or has been on the broad road which leads to destruction. Those who are on it are for the most part unaware of their need to experience salvation. They are comfortable, happy, enjoying their life. They may even believe that they have a relationship with God. They may be moral people, good family people, loving people, kind people. They may be good according to the world’s standards of righteousness. Many of these people are religious, and they are seeking to please whatever god they believe in. The reality is, however, that they are marching in lock-step with the world, unaware of the coming judgment. They need salvation, even though they do not know it and likely do not believe it; they need to be rescued from certain death and certain judgment. Salvation is the entering into the straight (narrow) gate, then the process of choosing the right direction over the wrong direction. The question is, how does one enter in? Salvation means that we are incapable of entering in, we need to be brought in, we need rescue! The narrow gate is hard to find! We do not know we need to find it, and in and of ourselves, we are incapable of finding it! How then, can we be saved? We must look to God. Psalm 3:8 Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah. Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Salvation is totally by God, based upon His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus through His shed blood, and not based upon anything that is done by man. It is God to whom salvation belongs. It is God who clothes us with salvation and righteousness. The free offer of salvation is for all who will believe, all who will look to Jesus and be saved. It is given on the basis of grace through faith. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Eph 2:8-10 (KJV) We are saved by grace through faith. These are not works that we do; we are incapable of either. Grace is unmerited favor. In other words, we don’t deserve it. It is a gift. It is accessed through faith, this is also given us by God. No we are not puppets, this does not negate our responsibility to respond. In other words, while it is God who clothes us with righteousness, we must put on the Lord Jesus Christ. He gives us the ability to respond, we must respond. However, we do not get to brag about salvation, for it is Christ who saved. He did all the work, we simply received the free gift. There is no boasting, all we can boast in is how good of a Savior He is. My wife bought a guitar online a couple of years ago in hopes that my daughter Grace would pick up the guitar and learn how to play. The simple reality is, Grace was just not interested. The gift was available, Wendy was even willing to help her learn, and even get lessons for her. Grace was not interested, and therefore not committed to it. However, our Son Eddie was, and he picked up the guitar and wanted to learn it. He could have never afforded a guitar on his own, so he took the gift meant for his sister. Indeed, he took the gift and made it his own. Over the years as he has received training and has purposed to master the guitar, he has become quite good at it. But without the guitar, the books, the training, his effort would be meaningless. He took the gift and he used the gift. Not a perfect illustration, but we can make a comparison that without Christ making the way to God through his blood, we could work all we wanted and practice religion all we wanted and not be saved from sin. We must receive the gift from the giver, and take hold of it for ourselves. But without the gift and the giver, our effort would be meaningless.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12 (KJV) The word receive λαμβάνω (lambanō 2983) means to take, take hold of, apprehend, to take or receive from another; to take what is given; hence, receive, pointing to an objective reception. Do not be mistaken; The power to become sons of God does not come from your own human strength, it comes from God! The ability to receive comes from God as well, so it is for any who will receive, that is, take hold of what is given. So, the Gospel is for whomever will take hold of the message, that is, whosoever will respond to or obey the Gospel….this is by the grace of God to give, as well as to draw men unto Himself. I will put it a different way. God gives us the faith, we must use the faith. God gives us the gift and the ability to receive, but we must receive and take hold of the gift. Salvation is based not on man’s goodness or ability, but on the merit of Jesus Christ, through simple belief. Whoever will receive him- that is- whoever will take hold of or receive the gift. Wait a minute- you say- what about repentance? My friend, if you are on the broad road that leads to destruction, and the end of the narrow road is life, then when you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you are changing direction! You are repenting! You are taking hold of, receiving the gift of the way He has made. It really is as simple as believing on His name! The phrase believe on means to rely on, place trust in, a fully convinced and self surrendering acknowledgement of His name and power. We believe into Christ. Our getting on that narrow road is not based on our power, it is based on His power. He gave them power. It is a gift, a gift in which we take His merit and get all the benefits of becoming the sons of God.Eph 1:4-7 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Salvation is God’s choice, not ours from the Old Testament example of the people of Israel, Jacob over Esau, the calling of Abraham, and on down the line showing that Salvation is God’s prerogative, whether it makes sense to us or not. It is the concept of Election, another big word. Election means that if we are in Christ, it means that you have been chosen by Him before the foundation of the world. He chose in Christ those whom He will graciously regenerate, save, and sanctify. The word chosen ἐκλέγω eklegō means to lay out together, pick out, select, choose. In an active sense, It means to pick out for one’s self, choose out, from preference, favor, or love. So God, in His love, has chosen those whom would be saved. He has declared that those who are saved will be holy and without blame. That means that he has saved us to be set apart unto Him, made without blame on the merit of Jesus Christ! He predestined προορίζω proorizō to set bounds before, that is He determined, decreed and ordained beforehand that we would be adopted as His Children in Christ Jesus, according to His good pleasure and His will. It is not by ourselves that we get holy and blameless, it is according to His grace that He has made us accepted. We don’t accept Him, he accepts us! We have been purchased out of sin and death (redemption, another big word) through His blood. By His blood, we have forgiveness of sins, by of the riches of his grace, again by His merit, not by our own merit.Eph 2:8-10 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. We are saved by grace through faith. These are not works that we do; we are incapable of either. Grace, χάρις (charis) is unmerited favor. The word in this context denotes specially, God’s grace and favor manifested towards mankind or to any individual, which, as a free act is no more hindered by sin than it is conditional upon works. It is the grace of God, because it denotes the relation assumed and maintained by God towards sinful man. It is joined with Christ, because it is manifested in and through Him. In other words, It is a gift from God which we don’t deserve and cannot earn. It is a gift, accessed through faith, πίστις pistis, that is to say firm persuasion, the conviction which is based upon hearing, not upon sight, or knowledge; a firmly relying confidence in what we hear from God in His Word. Faith that saves is also given us by God. We are not puppets, and God does not force us to respond. He gives us the gift of grace and of faith, and we must receive that gift and use it. We have a responsibility to respond to His kindness. We can reject His gift of grace and faith, or we can receive it. As a result, we do not get to brag about salvation, for it is Christ who saves us. The only boasting that we get to do is boasting in how good of a Savior Jesus is. The result of salvation is that we become God’s work of art, created in Christ Jesus (by grace through faith) to do good works. Being born again means that we have really become new creatures, with new hearts and new desires shaped by God so that we can do His work that He gives us to do on this earth.1 Peter 1:18-19 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Our salvation was not done casually, for our sin was against a infinitely holy and righteous God. The wages for sin is death (Romans 6:23) and the soul that sins shall die (Ezekiel 18:20). We cannot purchase our salvation with silver and gold. We cannot purchase it with our deeds of righteousness, for even our best deeds of righteousness are filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). We cannot purchase it with our religion, for our religion is simply more of these good works that we think will please God. We cannot purchase it with our family ties. We cannot purchase salvation with our denominational ties. These things are all corruptible, temporary, and will one day burn as acts that are done in the flesh. Even our repentance and other good works will one day be burned. It is only what Christ has done that purchases our salvation. The Bible teaches that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22) but even the shedding of our own blood would be insufficient to get the job done. It is the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, a lamb without spot and without blemish that is sufficient. The reason is simple. Jesus Christ was fully man. As a man, he lived on this earth in much the same way as we do. He was tempted in all ways, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). So, according to the law of man and God, he was not guilty of any crime. Yet, as a man, he was brutally murdered at the cross. His body was broken and His blood was shed. If he was simply a man, this death would be insignificant except that he was killed as an innocent man, so it would be a tragedy. But Jesus Christ was also fully God. He came to lay down His life for our sins. In being fully God, Jesus Christ could absorb the eternal wrath of God and the punishment that was due for every sin ever committed while hanging on the cross. This good news is concentrated in one verse:2 Corinthians 5:21 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Jesus Christ was made sin for us, even though He never sinned. The Greek word, ποιέω poieō, means to make, that is to say to form, produce, spoken of an external act as manifested in the production of something tangible. In other words, He had our sin placed upon him, and bore the penalty for that sin. He was not made a sinner, but God treated Jesus as though He was a sinner. He (God) made him to be sin (treated Him like a sinner) so that we, though we are unrighteous, could be made γίνομαι ginomai, that is, to begin to be righteous. In other words, we begin to be the righteousness of God through Jesus by a creative act of God in salvation. Ginomai implies origin, either from natural causes, to be born or made; or through special agency result, to take place, happen; a change of state, to become; or change of place. We were born into sin, and we were sinners, completely unrighteous before God. Jesus was righteous, and through an external act, God treated Him as though he was sin. But, for us, he not only treats us as though we are righteous, we become righteous. We are changed. It is a complete change of state. It is called being born again; we were born into sin, now we are born again into righteousness. It is an idea of now not yet; we are treated by God as though we are righteous, and one day we will become perfectly righteous. We have been made and will be made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. It was and it is a great exchange. We give Christ our sin and the penalty for it by belief in Him. In return, we get His righteousness. It is the best news ever.2 Corinthians 5: 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Paul sums it up here; in salvation we become new creatures. The old has passed away. The new has come. We have been brought from darkness to light. We have gone from being sons of wrath to being made children of God. The old things have passed, and the new has come. Salvation is something that has been purchased for all mankind, that is, the shedding of Christ’s blood was effective for all mankind. Unfortunately, it is only made efficient if one believes. In other words, as the verse above, we must be in Christ, that is, we must receive, or take hold of the good news of the Gospel. This is the only way that we can be made new. As the scripture teaches us, there are few that will do this. It is our responsibility of those who are now on the narrow path, who are now new creatures in Christ, to share with others who are on the broad road the good news. Will you share this good news with someone today?
