Blessings in Christ- Part 4

Blessings in Christ: The Book of Ephesians details the Holy Spirit's role in acquiring blessings for His children to the glory of God the Father. Learn about more of them here!

Blessings in Christ Part 1

Blessings in Christ Part 2

Blessings in Christ Part 3

As we were digging in last week to the Spiritual Blessings in Christ, I failed to finish a thought about eagerly waiting for Christ. This is a side product of faith, that is, an assurance of things not seen. The spiritual blessings that we have in Christ are something that we cannot see, but as Christians we know that they exist. As we learned in our last study, we certainly know that they exist, and that they are already ours because the One who has promised is faithful and true, and it is based upon His word- which is powerful, and it is ultimately all for His glory. However, we are still in the flesh, we still walk daily in this world and we can easily fall in love with it. Hence the warning from the Word of God:

1 John 2:15 -17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
What the world has to offer is enslavement to its principles, and addictions to its vices. The marketing plan of the world system that has most people in its grip is for things that lose value over time and are to be replaced with the newest and best to keep up with the Joneses. These things of the world offer temporary pleasures of sin for a season, and in its end is death. When we pursue the world-and this does include the approval of men-it demonstrates that the love of the Father God is not in us. The problem is that one day these things that are so important to us will all burn. It should make the permanence and assurance of what we have in Christ Jesus more precious to us. What we have in Christ is of eternal value, and it is to His glory. It will never pass away. He is the pearl of great price, something that we should be willing to sell or give away everything we have in order to possess. What God deserves is our very best- even though all we have to offer is filthy rags, but we lay down all of what we have at the foot of the cross because Jesus is worth it. Is Jesus precious to you? Are you willing to lay down all that you are and all that you have for the cause of Christ? Have you laid it all down at the foot of the cross because you understand the precious promises that are yours to possess because you have believed before they have come to pass? This is really what it means to be first to hope- we trust in Christ before all the benefits are revealed, knowing only that He can save us from our sin and the penalty we so richly deserve because of it. As we grow in Him, we begin to understand all of the spiritual blessings in Christ. We can know that because of His trustworthiness and His promise that we already have the precious promises, though we can only see through the glass darkly. He has already borne your sins, and when He comes again, it will not be as a sacrifice for sinners, but as a judge. For those who have not obeyed the Gospel by putting their trust in Christ alone, they will receive judgment and not mercy. For those of us who have trusted in Christ, he Has already paid the penalty, taking the judgment for our sins. He is coming back to save us in the sense that we will be judged based on what He has done and He will be taking us to glory with Him!
When we trust in Jesus, we are trusting that God will do what he says He will do and how He says He will do it. As we grow in Him, more and more of these precious promises are revealed. We not only become aware of them, but we begin to apply them and see them more in our daily lives. The more we know about Jesus, the more precious to us He becomes. Look at the ways in which He has blessed us; why would we love and serve anyone or anything else?
  • redeemed: We have been bought back out of slavery to sin and death by the price of Jesus shedding His precious blood on the cross. He paid the penalty for our sins as our substitute.
  • forgiveness: this means that all of our sins (trespasses) have been forgiven and forgotten completely because the shedding of Jesus’ blood remits our sins.
  • grace: We have received all of these blessings without any merit on our part; indeed this has been lavished on us because of the goodness and love of God towards us.
  • mystery revealed: We have insight, the mystery of salvation has been revealed to us because of the sovereign will of God in Christ, the ultimate purpose that all who are in Christ will be saved and united in Him.
  • obtained an inheritance: The inheritance we have obtained is salvation in Jesus’ name. Though we have attained it, we are still attaining it. We are growing more like Him in sanctification, and we will obtain it when we are glorified in heaven.
  • Faith-to the praise of His glory We have been given faith as a gift so that we can believe in His promises. As it is with God the Father, all the blessings that have been obtained for us by Christ are to the praise of His glory. When we love and serve Jesus having been saved from the wrath of God we are like trophies of grace for Him. Our salvation is the reward for His suffering.

13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

Here we make a transition to what the Holy Spirit’s role in our salvation and in the obtaining of the Spiritual blessings that we have in Christ. In him- Jesus Christ- remember the GR en means believing into- When we are in him it means we have believed into Him. In a spiritual sense those who have believed are in Christ and Christ is in us. We have been baptized into Christ. We identify with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection. We are his brothers and the Sons of God and joint heirs in Christ. When you see the phrase ‘in Him’ remember all these things about yourself as a Christian. Realize that He walks with you and occupies your very being and should be in control of you so that He can accomplish His purposes through you.

When you heard (GR ἀ¦κού¦σαν¦τες ah-koo-sahn-tehs) that is, when with the spiritually regenerated hearing you were able to hear the Good Shepherds voice and respond to Him in faith. What were you able to hear? the Word of Truth, the gospel of your salvation. I want you to consider this. Where did you first hear the Gospel, and from whom did you first hear the Gospel? In order to obtain this great salvation and all the spiritual blessings we must hear the Gospel:

Romans 10:14-17 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

The ability to hear the Gospel and respond in faith is a gift from God. There is a very special point that many people and you may miss here. To hear the word of Christ, there must be preachers of that word. Even though the ability to hear comes from Christ, we do not know to whom Jesus has given the ears to hear, nor do we know when Jesus has given them ears to hear. There are those necessarily whom we preach to who will not believe. But we must preach. We are all, as Christians, sent. How did you hear? How would you have heard had Jesus not given you ears to hear, or that person who told you the truth refused to obey the Great Commission to go into all the world and preach the Gospel? There is a mystery in the proclamation of the Good News, how the Holy Spirit carries it to the prepared ears of those listening to it through the vehicle of a preacher. This could be done without us, but we as Christians have the privilege and responsibility to be proclaimers of the Word of Christ-

The Word of truth: In this chapter of Ephesians, the Word of Truth is identified as the gospel of your salvation and it is the same as the phrase the word of Christ in the book of Romans. It is the Gospel, which is the truth that we are dead in our trespasses and sins, children of wrath in rebellion against a holy, righteous, and pure God. But God, who is rich in mercy, sent Jesus Christ to redeem us and grant us forgiveness by his magnificent grace. Not only has He saved us from the penalty of sin, but he is saving us from the power of sin day by day. One day, we will be glorified with Him, and our salvation will be complete. This is all the result of hearing the word of truth and believing in Him as John the beloved apostle states in his gospel:

12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

So we hear the word of truth, and believe in the Word- Jesus Christ because God has elected us to believe, giving us ears to hear the Gospel and the heart to believe in it. As a result, when we believe, we are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. The word sealed is GR ἐσ¦φρα¦γίσ¦θη¦τε ehs-frah-gees-they-teh which is a mark that would identify us as His. We are identified as God’s adopted children by the mark of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling us. The seal placed on an official document by a king or other authority represented four things that can also be said of us who are sealed by the Holy Spirit:

  • Security: The mark of the king secured the object- example was the tomb in which Jesus was placed- no human would dare mess with what was sealed under penalty of death. God secures those who are His.
  • Authenticity: When someone would place their seal on an object, it represented their name and the authenticity of the object that was sealed. When we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, we are identified as God’s children.
  • Ownership: The seal also represented ownership, like with the bondservant getting his ear pierced as a symbol of willing servanthood. We were bought with a price in Christ Jesus.
  • Authority: We carry the authority of King Jesus; when we speak His Words of life it is as though He is speaking through us!
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

As God’s adopted children, this seal is the promise of our inheritance. God has placed His name on us, and He will complete what He has promised in and through us. The word translated guarantee in the ESV and the earnest in the KJV is GR ἀρ¦ρα¦βὼν ahr-rah-bohn and it could be translated down-payment. He has provided the down payment guaranteeing those who are his will receive all the spiritual blessings that He has given us in Christ Jesus! We can trust Him because He has provided the payment and the result is to the praise of His glory. He will complete what He has promised because it is done for His glory, we are His trophies that guarantees Jesus gets the reward for His suffering.

Knowing what we now know about all the spiritual blessings that we have in Christ Jesus ought to make us think twice about what we earnestly seek in this world. Jesus Christ has redeemed us out of slavery, we have been adopted as the sons of God, and we are heirs of God, joint-heirs in Christ. He has set his seal upon us as a promise that He would complete our salvation and that we would receive all the spiritual blessings promised. Yet how many of us still dabble with the world system, seeking the approval of peasants when we have the authority of the king? How many of us pursue possessions that are temporary when we have everything we need in Christ? What we have in Christ makes all the world and all of her approval pale in comparison. Oh that we would know Christ and make Him known! That we would walk in the authority of the King!
